Taboos in the Coating Industry: Let's Take a Look at Which Mistakes Are Hard to Remedy.
Some foods cannot be eaten together.
Some things cannot be used at the same time.
Some things also cannot be done at the same time.
There are dietary taboos that one must know.
But did you know that paints also have this?
It has been found that many netizens are asking questions about whether certain paints can be mixed or used together, or if they can be replaced with one another. So, let me explain some of the dos and don'ts of using paints!
Do not buy scented paints.
There are some inferior so-called "purification products" on the market that remove odors by adding a large amount of fragrance, but they do not actually eliminate harmful substances.
Therefore, it is best to choose odorless paints when buying. Before use, open the paint can and simply check the quality of the paint in three steps: First, look for any sediment, clumping, or severe layering; if present, it indicates poor quality. Second, smell it; if it has a foul or strong irritating odor, it indicates that the paint quality is not up to standard. Third, stir it gently with a stick; if the paint stays on the stick for a long time and covers evenly, it indicates good quality.
(All are various volatile toxic substances, which must be avoided.)
Latex paint and wood paint cannot be applied at the same time.
Wood paint and latex paint cannot be applied at the same time. Industry insiders suggest applying wood paint first and then wall paint to prevent the components in the wood paint from contaminating the wall and causing it to turn yellow. Moreover, applying a primer on the wall can make it last longer; the primer can seal the wall's base layer, improving the adhesion and fullness of the topcoat. Not using a primer may lead to discoloration and peeling of the paint film later, which is more troublesome and costly.
Interior and exterior wall paints can be mixed and used.
Interior wall paint and exterior wall paint cannot be mixed because their materials and effects are different. However, they can partially be interchangeable; exterior wall paint can be used for interior walls because, in terms of environmental standards and water resistance, there is not much difference between the two. However, interior wall paint is relatively weaker in UV resistance and sun exposure compared to exterior wall paint. Experts still recommend using specialized products.
Latex paint and oil-based paint can be used together.
Latex paint is water-based, while oil paint is oil-based. Generally speaking, they can be applied together, but some polyurethane paints contain free TDI or toluene that can chemically react with certain components in latex paint, causing the latex paint to yellow. Therefore, it is advisable to first apply the oil paint on wooden surfaces and then apply latex paint on walls and ceilings after the oil paint has dried, avoiding simultaneous or mixed use as much as possible.
Try not to use the same color on the walls.
Improper color use on walls can lead to health issues. Gold reflects light easily, which can harm the eyes; orange affects sleep quality and is not suitable for bedrooms, but it can stimulate appetite and decorate dining rooms; yellow slows down thinking speed and is not suitable for studies; blue can add a sense of mystery and privacy in bathrooms; black is too heavy, and prolonged use of pink can lead to irritability, all of which should be avoided in large areas.
When using various colors, they should complement each other; it is best not to use only one color. It is important to choose environmentally friendly products from reputable brands for paints, as wallpapers and wallpaper adhesives contain harmful substances, so be sure to choose eco-friendly materials when purchasing.
Different brand paints should not be mixed.
It is recommended not to mix paint products from different brands. This is because different brands may use different types of resin or polyester, and the pigment and additive components vary. Mixing with thinners and hardeners in different ratios may lead to ineffective results or even cause peeling.
Paints from the same brand but different series (must be of the same type, such as all polyester water-based paints) can be used together. It is not recommended to use different brands of the same type of paint, but as long as there is enough time between applications (mainly ensuring they are dry), it is acceptable to use them together. Although the above methods are not advisable, they can effectively prevent waste, and you can choose based on your actual situation.
