Can anti-formaldehyde paint actually work?
Undoubtedly, in today's home interior decoration, formaldehyde has become the number one culprit of decoration pollution, thus a variety of formaldehyde-removing coatings have emerged in the market.
Anti-formaldehyde coatings utilize nano photocatalysis to degrade formaldehyde. Under specific activity and nano photocatalysts, the paint film coating undergoes redox reactions when exposed to natural light, sunlight, or ordinary lighting, continuously releasing a large number of negative oxygen ions, effectively degrading indoor formaldehyde. Moreover, anti-formaldehyde coatings have clear requirements for indoor VOC content.
In response to the hot sale of "anti-formaldehyde coatings," some media reporters conducted in-depth market visits and found that many paint products had the words "anti-formaldehyde" printed on their packaging and were sold as flagship products. Some promotional materials indicated that the formaldehyde purification efficiency or the durability of the formaldehyde purification efficiency had been verified by professional testing institutions. In a paint sales store near Tanggu Hebei Road, a salesperson recommended an "anti-formaldehyde" coating to the reporter, stating that the product is a new high-end product that perfectly combines "deodorization technology" and "formaldehyde decomposition" technology, which not only significantly reduces residual odors in the product, achieving true deodorization, but also effectively reduces the formaldehyde content in indoor air. In another paint store, it was claimed that their product contains natural bamboo charcoal, which can effectively adsorb formaldehyde and other harmful gases, keeping indoor air fresh. The reporter found that compared to ordinary coatings, this so-called "anti-formaldehyde coating," which claims to effectively treat the free formaldehyde, VOCs, benzene, and other toxic volatile substances released during the decoration process, is at least 30% more expensive or even higher. However, the "high price" did not deter consumers; faced with the complex array of "anti-formaldehyde" coating products, most consumers are not aware of the actual effectiveness of "anti-formaldehyde."
Although many paint brands currently promote "anti-formaldehyde" products, not all products truly possess the "anti-formaldehyde" effect. What issues should consumers pay attention to when purchasing in the complex paint market?
When purchasing paint, how can one identify whether it is a green and environmentally friendly anti-formaldehyde coating? First, choose branded products when buying, and request product testing reports from the brand merchants. According to Li Jing, it is also important to carefully check the product's quality inspection report, especially the VOC content on the quality inspection report. The national standard stipulates that the VOC limit should not exceed 200g per liter, with better coatings being below 100g per liter, and environmentally friendly coatings approaching 0.
If permitted by the brand, you can open the paint bucket for personal inspection. If the product shows severe layering, it indicates poor quality; gently stir with a stick, and if the paint stays on the stick for a long time and covers evenly, it indicates better quality.
